Hi, Kim. The pineapple provides the "sweet" flavor in the 'sweet-sour' and gives the Asian sweetness to the dish. The cornstarch is for thickening it. As a substitute, you can try orange juice in the same amount of the recipe. And in place of cornstarch, try all purpose flour. Good luck and let me know how it turns out. Thanks for the blog visit :-)

Thanks, Nami. I think it was the free ice cream that the owners sent us which made these bola-bola so memorable. The 'panciteria' is still there in our hometown would you believe. Yes, those were the best memories :-)

Thanks, Adora. Would you believe this panciteria is still around in our old home town, though the owners are the younger generation now. I doubt if they'll still give us free ice cream, though -- times have changed :-)

This post brought back memories of our local panciteria. The memories of the aroma is indelible. Your sweet and sour bola bola is so inviting, Elizabeth. I must find that panciteria that gives away ice cream!
