These cook faster and in half the time in the Instant Pot multi-cooker/ pressure cooker. A rich, thick coconut syrup is boiled separately and served as a topping option. Other topping suggestions for this type of suman are latik (fried coconut sprinkles) mixed with sugar or freshly-grated coconut. Pair suman with fresh, ripe, sweet mangoes in season and it’s the perfect snack or dessert.

When my cousin Janet brought me back salted egg chips as pasalubong (gifts from travel) from the Philippines, my family craved for more long after the chips were gone. These chips are not yet sold widely in America, if at all. So I made my own.

If more convenient, use sharp cheddar instead. The baking process is simple. Just mix the dough, refrigerate for easier handling, roll out and bake. Baking these crackers is a good idea especially if you have an abundance of cheeses from the holidays or merely want to diffuse the rich decadence from the heavy desserts of Christmas. Pack these in airtight, covered tins or cookie jars. Serve as snacks or appetizers.

In my travels to the Philippines, I often order this drink to go with my Filipino meals at restaurants. It is widely available. Grab some crisp, crunchy churros. Hold it upright, then quickly dunk it into the mug of Filipino chocolate known as ‘tsokolate’. Expect nothing else but a potion of thick, rich, heavy, indulgent, dark-tasting chocolate. Swirl the churros around the hefty chocolate drink, then lift it up,...
