We made these Asian Beef Sliders with Grilled Asparagus today. There are fireworks, picnics and warm summer days. It’s the 4th of July and here we are, mid year, on a hot scorching day, celebrating another holiday, and in our family, another birthday.

It’s the all-American holiday to signal that summer in the USA is now in full swing. The Filipino in us cannot help but celebrate in a big way, and often always with food. My oldest son was home for a family birthday. So, we fired up the grill.  My sons like to come home to Asian food. This is what inspired my son, Tim to add sweet, salty and tangy Asian flavors to these hearty beef sliders.

We started with a basic, lean ground beef. While Tim was enroute, I pre-seasoned the beef with hints of worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, onion and garlic flavors, and a spritz of lime. Tim arrived hungry, holding up a big bag of tiny, round bread buns for these sliders.

Tim added his own flavors and here’s the rest of how he worked his magic :

“ I added these:
A pinch of pepper and a handful of parsley flakes, I prefer fresh leaves.

I formed the patties and laid them out onto a tray.

Then I glazed the top half of each patty with some sweet hoisin sauce.

For grilling instructions, and then on the grill, Tim said:

“ I placed the “naked” side of patty on grill first, the hoisin side up. When it felt right, I flipped it ONCE so that the hoisin side was down. Then I took the burger patties off the grill when finished. It’s important to note that there is not much in the way of instruction when grilling burger patties. One must simply know that the grill should be preheated to 400-500 degrees and then cooked according to preference.

 Rare .. ~ 2-3 min per side

Med .. ~ 3-4 min per side

Well .. ~ 7-8 min per side

This will change depending on the grill and the person grilling.”  Tim said on a final note.

And with that, he scooped up the last patty on the grill, with its aromatic zesty Asian flavors, placed it atop the freshly toasted tiny buns, and served it on the table paired with grilled asparagus seasoned with drops of extra virgin olive oil and salt, all served with cold potato salad and some chilled beer.

Simple, homemade, good grilling was all that was needed for a great 4th of July family meal. We had the good beef, some freshly made bread buns, and Asian flavors found right in our pantry. Happy 4th of July, America!
